2021-2022 ESSER III/SIIP At-a-Glance
Background: The Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER III) is a federal grant which requires that spending be used in specific areas. Part of the Fairfax County Public Schools spending plan identifies funding to be used for Unfinished Learning and Student Academic and Social, Emotional, Mental Health (Wellness) Needs. Schools have been given funding allocations to support the academic and wellness needs of students. Schools are required to create plans in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Wellness highlighting the strategies they will use to support these areas using their ESSER III funding. These strategies are shown below.
ESSER III English Language Arts Strategies
Outcome: Ensure students are making sufficient progress to be on grade level in English Language Arts.
- Strategy 1 - Leverage block 4/ advisory to support identified students (Tier 2 intervention)
- Strategy 2 - Leverage Tier 1 instruction to support development of executive functioning skills impacting achievement
- Strategy 3 - Provide instructional materials and supplies (professional texts) to build capacity in teacher leaders
- Strategy 4 - Building Cultures of Thinking to support learners in developing dispositions that support thoughtful learning across contents
ESSER III Mathematics Strategies
Outcome: Ensure students are making sufficient progress to be on grade level in Mathematics.
- Strategy 1 - Create additional section of Pre-Algebra to decrease class size and offer additional space for students who may move into Cooper or move class placements
- Strategy 2- Support struggling Algebra 1 students through targeted block 4 advisory time
- Strategy 3 - Creation of review materials for foundation skills (fractions, integers, etc.) needed to be successful in current class placement
- Strategy 4 - Provide instructional materials and supplies (professional texts) to build capacity in teacher leaders
ESSER III Wellness Strategies
Outcome: Ensure students feel safe, included, and supported in the school environment.
- Strategy 1 - Student groups
- Strategy 2- Leverage time in block 4 to support student wellness
- Strategy 3 - Mentoring Program
- Strategy 4 - Wellness through counseling and culturally responsive teaching practices
Background: All Fairfax County schools are also required to complete an access and opportunity goal as part of their School Innovation and Improvement Plan (SIIP) and can also capture additional goals. These are shown below.
Access & Opportunity End of Year SMARTR Outcome
Goal: By the end of the 2021-22 school year, all 8th-grade students will be provided the opportunity to participate in Portrait of a Graduate Presentations of Learning (POG POL), where they will share their growth in Portrait of a Graduate attributes supported by a Schoology portfolio of evidence generated through authentic assessments and meaningful learning experiences. Additionally, student experience data will reveal increased understanding of the benefits of engaging in growth-oriented student-led assessment.
- Strategy 1 - Students will engage in meaningful learning experiences and demonstrate understanding through authentic assessments; this learning will be captured in Civics 8 and English 8.
- Strategy 2 - Students will utilize technology in order to create and curate a portfolio in Schoology.
- Strategy 3 - Students will engage in a Presentation of Learning at the end of the year to discuss their growth as a student.
