October 29th Assembly

October 10, 2018

Cooper Middle School has partnered with Longfellow Middle School to offer a guest speaker to both you and your students on Monday, October 29th. Your children will hear his presentation during the school day on Monday and parents are invited to hear the presentation on Monday night at Longfellow Middle School from 7:00pm – 8:30pm.

Mr. Halligan will relay his own tragic experience as a Dad whose 13-year-old son took his own life in 2003, after incessant bullying by peers since the 5th grade, both in school and online. Mr. Halligan further shares that Ryan wrestled with underlying mental health issues and depression, and that these factors contributed to Ryan’s vulnerability and ultimate suicide. His story is riveting and powerful, and reminds students there is a face, a person and a heart on the other side of the technology screen.

His presentation will begin with a short video collection of home movie clips and pictures of Ryan. John will then tell Ryan’s story and the factors that led up to his son’s suicide. The students will gain a perspective from inside a child’s family who is a victim of bullying and cyberbullying. They also will gain an awareness of the signs and risks of teenage suicide and how best to help a friend. As part of his presentation, students will have the chance to ask Mr. Halligan questions. We encourage you to visit Mr. Halligan’s website: www.RyansStory.org for more information.
