Outcome goals for this academic school year

Cooper Middle School | Fairfax County Public Schools | Region 1

End of Year SMARTR Outcome #1

By Spring 2018, all students will demonstrate growth in the area of expository writing by meeting or exceeding their differentiated growth score as measured on the Composing/ Written Expression rubric.

Strategy 1

Provide different course options and pathways to meet diverse student needs including Responsive Writing and QST Intervention

Strategy 2

Provide in class differentiations on the following topics:

  • Unpacking a prompt (understanding and answering the prompt provided)
  • Generating a thesis statement
  • Introduction paragraphs (hook, transition, context, thesis statement)
  • Continued instruction on CECc paragraphs
  • Conclusion paragraphs (restated thesis, restatement of main ideas, last impression)
  • Revision strategies for sentence structure and word choice
  • Editing strategies for correct capitalization, punctuation, spelling, and grammar

End of Year SMARTR Outcome #2

In the 2017-18 school year, all Cooper Middle School students will develop creative and critical thinking skills through participation in a project that emphasizes process over product and is designed to foster students’ growth as thinkers and learners.

Students’ proficiency in articulating ideas and demonstrating critical and creative thinking toward an authentic goal will be assessed through the completion of four key components (Research, Individual Process Log, Reflection Essay, and Visual Presentation) using a rubrics (where 7th grade’s rubric is based on FPCS Portrait of a Graduate rubrics). Across the four key components, the majority of students will achieve a passing score.

Strategy 1

Emphasize the importance of performing service learning hours with students.  (Ethical and Global Citizen)

Strategy 2

Continue to strengthen projects by using the Project Based Learning model for 7th grade QUEST.  (Creative and Critical Thinker/Communicator/Collaborator)
