Congratulations, Principal McLoughlin!
The Region 1 Office is pleased to announce that Maureen McLoughlin has been selected as the principal of Cooper Middle School. Ms. McLoughlin brings over two decades of experience as an educator to this role. She started her career in education as a 7th and 8th-grade English teacher at Katherine Johnson Middle School. After six years as a teacher, she was chosen as the English Department Chair and part-time curriculum support teacher. In these roles, she planned and facilitated instruction for English, Creative Writing, and Journalism classes.
In 2001, Ms. McLoughlin was selected as an assistant principal at Franklin Middle School. As a school-based administrator, she led job-embedded professional development and collaborated with teacher teams to improve student learning. To promote a positive school culture, Ms. McLoughlin led the design and implementation of team-building activities for all staff.
In 2017, Ms. McLoughlin returned to education as a literacy and assessment coach at Herndon Middle School. In this role, she supported 7th and 8th-grade English and Reading collaborative learning teams and delivered professional development on a myriad of topics, including learning targets, complex learning tasks, and blended learning.
In 2018, Ms. McLoughlin was selected as an assessment coach at Rachel Carson Middle School, where she continued to lead professional development. One of her most significant accomplishments was administering over 5500 SOL, WIDA, and NAEP tests to over 800 students at over 30 locations.
In 2020, Ms. McLoughlin was named an assistant principal at Cooper Middle School. In this role, she has led an increase in the enrollment of 8th graders in Algebra 1. Ms. McLoughlin’s instructional leadership and support of math teachers led to all students who were recommended for Math 7 Honors successfully passing the course and advancing to Algebra 1 in the 8th grade.
Ms. McLoughlin is a proud graduate of Madison High School. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts and Science and a Master of Education in Administration from Virginia Tech. Her dedication to education has been recognized with the 2021 Langley Pyramid Outstanding Leader and the 2025 Cooper Middle School Outstanding Leader awards.
