Cooper PTO 2024-25 Executive Board Slate Announcement

A huge thank you to all who participated in the recruitment process for our Executive Board Slate and committee lead positions!  Extra kudos to current board member, Christina Saxon, for her leadership of the nominating committee.

Buy Your Tickets Now for the 8th Grade Party:  Monday, June 10, 12:45-2:15pm

Let’s send our 8th graders off to high school in style!  The celebration includes:

  • Fun activities: DJ, photo booth, inflatable obstacle course, basketball, backyard games, and crafts!
  • Raffle prizes such as gift cards to their favorite stores (Nike, Lululemon, Under Armor), Langley gear, and more!
  • Chick Fil-A, pizza and sweet treats!

Tickets purchased by Friday, May 17 are $25 per student and will increase to $30 each on Saturday, May 18. Please include your child’s name with payment via Venmo (preferred option - @CooperPTO), cash or check (Cooper MS PTO; drop at the front office), or PayPal ([email protected]; do not select “business” account). 

Please note:  new this year.  If you would like to contribute additional funding to sponsor a member of our Cooper community for whom this fee causes financial burden, please  include an additional amount in your payment.

Rising 9th Graders:  Register for Langley Athletics:  AFTER MAY 6

***Apologies that this was advertised too early!  Our rising 9th graders won’t be loaded into the Langley system before May 6****

Rising 9th graders who wish to play sports next year at Langley must register with the athletics department and submit a physical dated May 1, 2024 or later.  A physical clinic will be held at Langley on Wednesday, May 1, as a benefit for the athletics program.  More information on registering for sports next year can be found on the Langley Athletics website .

SCA is hosting a BAKE OFF on Wednesday, May 1st from 2:30 – 3:30 in Room 1407. Do you want bragging rights that you are the best baker? Meet us in Mrs. Harris’s room for a chance to win Cooper Baker of the Year! Baked goods must have detailed ingredients listed. Don’t forget to add your name! Items can be dropped off in Mrs. Harris’s room either in the morning or during advisory.

TOMMORROW 9 - 10:30AM:  LHS Director of Student Activities and Tour of the New Space

The April 12 PTO General Membership Meeting will feature Geoff Noto, Langley HS Director of Student Activities, about all the offerings available to our rising 9th graders.  Competitive academics (Model UN, etc) a huge offering of club options, and sports teams all fall under his purview. 

Additionally, tours of the newly opened wing of the school will be available for parents curious about the new space.  See you tomorrow, in the Cooper cafeteria!

Kent Gardens is hosting Heritage Night (formerly known as International Night) on April 20th.

Bands on the Run 5K - April 21

Lace up your running shoes and join the Langley HS and Cooper MS bands at the 5th Annual Bands on the Run 5K!  We’ll hit the pavement on Sun, Apr 21 at 8 am for a fun and fitness-filled morning. All ages and fitness levels are welcome. Run the course like a pro or walk the course with a friend! Stay afterwards and enjoy live DJ music, refreshments and sponsors’ tables. 

Race registration is $35 for students 6-18 years old and $40 for adults. Register by Fri, Mar 29 to be guaranteed an official race t-shirt in your size and before prices go up. Children 5 and under are free! Cross off a "to-do" and enjoy spring break: Sign up here today!

SCA Dance: Thank you, Volunteers!

Thank you to our fabulous volunteer parents who turned out for the Cooper dance last Friday!  350 students danced the night away and a great time was had by all.  Our SCA and their sponsors were fantastic party planners!

UPDATED List of Requested Items:  March Madness Canned Food Drive:  SHARE of McLean

In addition to the canned food items requested below, SHARE would also benefit from your donations of the following:

-paper towels

-cleaning products (Fabuloso, Ajax, Comet, Spic and Span, Windex)

-paper products (individually wrapped roles of paper towels, tissues, multi-purpose cleaning cloths)

-food storage items (plastic wrap, aluminum foil, gallon ziplock bags)

-plastic trash bags

Help restock the shelves at SHARE of McLean, and help hungry children, families, and seniors in our immediate community by donating food pantry items as specified below, or grocery gift cards in the amount of $25.  Donations will be accepted every Friday during the month of March via the donation bin outside of the main office.  Donations of gift cards should be delivered to the main office front desk.  SHARE has specifically asked for these items at this time:

- Canned fruit

- Canned chicken and fish

- Canned or dried beans (pinto, garbanzo, kidney) Canned diced tomatoes and tomato sauce (15 oz.)

- Pasta (elbow, penne, rigatoni) Crackers

** We currently do not need spaghetti, canned vegetables, or soup**

SCA Dance: Friday, March 1st - Free for Students and Parent Volunteers Needed

SCA is hosting our second school-wide dance on March 1st from 7-9pm in the gym! Doors open at 6:30 and parents are requested to be ready for pickup right at 9! Entry is FREE, but reserved only for Cooper students. Everyone who attends is encouraged to bring a canned food item to donate to McLean Share. Thank you to everyone who voted for our theme, which will be… HOLLYWOOD! We hope to see you March 1st!!

Parent volunteers are necessary to make this event a success!  Complete this Google Form to join in the fun.

The PTO is able to offer this dance without an entry fee for students thanks to our members who’ve donated funds as well as those in our community who have participated in fundraisers throughout the year.  Thank you!

VDOT Public Meeting - Temp Traffic Change for Dead Run and Georgtown Pike:  Wednesday, February 28th, 7pm-9pm

Join the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) for a public meeting for the local community about a proposed temporary traffic change to help relieve congestion at the Dead Run Drive and Georgetown Pike Intersection in McLean. VDOT is proposing a left-turn restriction from northbound Dead Run Drive to westbound Georgetown Pike during peak travel periods. This restriction would be implemented by VDOT and its 495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project partners, in coordination with Fairfax County, as a temporary measure to improve travel in this area.  The meeting will be held Weds, Feb 28, at Churchill Rd Elementary, from 7-9.

Save the Date:  February PTO General Membership Meeting

The February PTO meeting will be held on Friday, February 16, at 9AM in the Cooper Cafeteria.  Details to follow next week.

SCA Programming:

Starting today, students can purchase a confection confession to be delivered to the person of their choosing on Valentine’s Day (2/14).  For $1, student can choose between one of four pre-made cards that will be delivered (with a lollipop!) to their friend.  Student may purchase 2/1 - 2/9 before and after school from Mrs. Harris (room 1407) or Ms. McNulty (room 2402).

Second Semester PTO Programming Overview:

Here’s a sneak peak at what’s in the works for the next few months for students, parents and staff.  Let us know how you’d like to be involved.

  • Feb: counselor appreciation week, bus driver appreciation day

Cooper Accolades:

Congratulations to Cooper student Zohran Valliani, whose team won second place in Congressman Gerry Connolly’s App Challenge!  Impressively, Zohran was one of the contest’s youngest participants.  Way to go!

Congratulations and best of luck to both of our Kid’s Lit Teams that advance to compete at nationals this weekend in Connecticut!  Your Cooper family is cheering for you!
