Women in STEM Essay Contest – Deadline February 10

The McLean Area Branch of AAUW (American Association of University Women) invites 7th and 8th girls and boys to discover and publicize women including women of color (non-white) who made a difference in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields, but who received little or no recognition for their contributions while they were alive. Strong preference is given to essays about women who are not well known even today.

Essays should be no more than 500 words to describe one woman's contribution to STEM, discuss the impact, and clearly state why he or she picked that woman. We will award five prizes: First Place ($100) and four Honorable Mention prizes (each $25).

For more information and to find application forms, visit the AAUW website here: https://mclean-va.aauw.net/stem-essay-contest-2025-copy/

Well Wishes for Principal Barrow

Principal Barrow’s last day with us at Cooper is Friday, January 17, 2025. We will miss her terribly, but we know she’ll be a welcome addition to the team at Glasgow Elementary School.

To help our families wish her a fond farewell, we’re encouraging students to take advantage of opportunities provided at school over the coming weeks—they’ll get a chance to make cards or small posters during school hours. Of course, they are also welcome to get creative on their own time if they like!

For parents and caregivers who would like to express thanks, memories, or general warm wishes, the PTO has set up a “Kudoboard,” which is a virtual corkboard where you can “pin” your messages. We’ll give Mrs. Barrow the link to her Kudoboard on her last day.

Happy Thanksgiving

For all who celebrate, we wish you a happy and peaceful holiday full of good times, great food, and gratitude. We are grateful to be part of such a thoughtful, generous community here at Cooper.

Cooper Chili Potluck—Donations Needed

One of Cooper Middle School’s many well-loved traditions is the PTO-sponsored chili potluck lunch for our staff and teachers. Every year, our parent community generously donates a favorite chili, side dish, or dessert, and we invite our teachers and staff to come enjoy this wonderful lunch. This year, the potluck is on December 13, and we are excited to see what our many chili afficionados will come up with.

Here’s our link to sign up to contribute—and thank you so much in advance!

School Directory

The Cooper PTO is working with the AtoZ app to prepare your school directory. To complete it, all families must verify and update their information. What this means is that you will be receiving (or may have already received) an email from [email protected] OR [email protected] with instructions and links to update your information. The best way to get the most out of this terrific resource is to have all families verify and update their information.

Please note:  AtoZ (MembershipToolkit) is the same app that many other schools in our pyramid use.  If you already have a login at a different school – you may use that to login here and then add Cooper to your organization list.  Settings made for last year’s directory at Cooper should have been maintained but should be reconfirmed.

If you prefer to bypass the email, you may go to  https://cooperpto.membershiptoolkit.com  to get started.  Apologies to the few families who were on top of things and already logged in – you will have to do it again now that the system has been setup for the new school year.

Questions: Please feel free to email [email protected].

Understanding the Adolescent Brain – October 9

Join us for our next general membership meeting on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at 7:00 pm in the cafeteria.

Our topic: trying to figure out how to understand what’s going on inside the minds of our rapidly changing children! Cooper Middle School counselor Michele Saint Germain will hold an interactive, informative session – shining a light on the inner workings of your child’s social, academic, physical and emotional development. She’ll examine the many contradictions that appear in this growth stage and suggest ways to cope with and process our own shifting role as parents.

Parent Volunteers Needed

Vision Screening: the annual FCPS vision screening event at Cooper runs this year on October 7 and October 8. We need parent volunteers to guide students in and out of those screening sessions—which are held in the gym. It’s a fun way to see your child for a few brief moments and help the school make things move smoothly.

Please use this SignUp Genius to sign up for as many slots as you are able.

Picture Day: Come help the students get their pictures taken! They get photographed during their PE classes, so you can sign up for a time when you might even get a glimpse of your child. If they have PR on odd days, they’ll be on October 10th, and October 11 for even day PE students.

Use this SignUp Genius to sign up for one or more slots to help make the day run smoothly, and thanks in advance for your help!
